Ben at the double for winning Whites

Monday, March 08, 2010, 07:30

A "professional" performance from Lincoln United ensured they gained all the three points with a 3-1 win against the UniBond League Division One (South) bottom club Willenhall Town on Saturday.

A Ben Garrick brace and Matt O'Halloran's clinical finish gave the Whites victory at Ashby Avenue, with Andy Dunkerley having equalised for the visitors.

"It was a professional performance if you can say that at a semi-professional level. We were asked to go out there and do a job." said goalscorer O'Halloran.

"The discipline had to be right. Obviously they've had a very bad season with the point deductions and the problems at their club and we knew they would come here and try and play.

"It could have been five or six in the end and we're disappointed we didn't keep a clean sheet but we're now seven unbeaten and the run keeps going."

United did not have to wait long for their opener, with Garrick latching on to a through-ball and lobbing Town keeper Matt Jones after just three minutes.

But Willenhall were on level terms after 25 minutes, Dunkerley firing past Mario Ziccardi after finding a route through the United defence.

Garrick grabbed his second three minutes later.

After a good build up of one-touch passing, O'Halloran laid the ball off to the striker in the area and he found the net.

United had chances to extend their lead, Jones making stunning saves from O'Halloran and skipper Brendan McDaid.

Then in 74th minute, O'Halloran, on the edge of the area, curled the ball past Jones and into the bottom right corner to kill off Willenhall's resistance.

O'Halloran hailed the impact Garrick has had at the Whites since his switch from Spalding United in December.

"Ben's making the bad balls that are played over the top into good balls. Obviously his pace is a major help as well and he seems to be linking up well with Sam Wilkinson." said O'Halloran (pictured right).

"It gives me a bit more space to play in with his pace, as well, and his goal to game record, since he arrived here has been fantastic.

"But I think it's not just his goals, but his work rate in general has helped the team."

Since the arrival of Garrick, Whites manager John Wilkinson has changed the formation with O'Halloran moving from the wing into the middle of the pitch, something the former Boston United player thinks is benefitting the whole team.

"I think now I have more influence over a game," he said.

"When you are on the wing you can go through an entire game and not see the ball and you can be frozen out of the game, whereas I feel now I can get my foot on the ball and link up with the forwards and I have more influence.

"The formation is helping us as a team and it's proven with this run of form.

"We've certainly caught up with a lot of teams point wise and we've just got to keep our heads down and keep working hard and then see what happens."
