Lee-Bob Jackson just misses out on Aprilia Superteen title
Heading into the final round at Rockingham, Lee-Bob (14) trailed championship leader Wayne Ryan by 44 points.
But a series of outstanding performances – including victories in both Saturday races and a fifth place in Sunday's first race – meant he trailed his main rival by just four points heading into the crunch decider.
And things looked rosy for the North Kesteven School pupil when he roared into second place with Wayne far behind in 10th.
Had the two riders remained in those positions, Lee-Bob would have won the championship.
However, with just two laps remaining Lee-Bob crashed out, handing the title to Wayne.
"Lee-Bob was really upset and disappointed," said his mother, Sam.
"But he didn't do anything wrong, he just lost that one race. Heading into the weekend we knew he only had a small chance of winning the championship so to have got so close is an amazing achievement."
Lee-Bob will now turn his attentions to the 125GP series, which is a significant step up in class.
He qualified and finished the final two races of this season and will race full-time next year.
His family hope that Lee-Bob will be among four riders chosen to compete for the newly-formed Racing Steps Foundation team.
The RSF has already helped the likes of Bassingham-based Jack Harvey develop through the ranks of karting and Formula BMW, they are now moving into motorbikes.
"Lee-Bob has a two-day assessment on Thursday and Friday of next week at Rockingham," said Sam Jackson.
"Four riders will compete and they will be completely paid for, so it is a fantastic opportunity. There are eight riders going in for the trials and hopefully Lee-Bob will be chosen."
