The week-end saw the last two cup finals decided, both played at Sincil Bank, thanks to the generosity of Lincoln City FC.  On a glorious afternoon Plough Skellingthorpe lifted the Village Trophy for only the second occasion in their history, the last time being back in the 1949-50 season. This saw Plough complete a league double while opponents Heckington United ended a second season without any silverware.  In the second final, the Horace Franklin Cup, Metheringham overcame Cherry Knights.

One league games also took place with RMSC closing the season with a third win in a row as they beat Horncastle Town. In mid week League runners-up Ivy Tavern CSA ended their season with a defeat at Heckington United.

Plough FC Skellingthorpe, already League champions, went into the Village Trophy final as favourites and they proved value for money beating Heckington United 2-0 in front of a large crowd. Giant central defender Simon Oborne got one of the Plough goals while Johnny Bell put himself in contention for the Charles Hammond Leading Scorers Award as he netted the other. He now has 25 goals, just two less than Heckington’s Michael Musson.  Heckington’s veteran keeper Neil Terry played for much of the second half of the game with a broken jaw, incurred in a collision. He underwent an operation on Sunday to put two plates in his jaw and our good wishes go out to him.

In the second final the Horace Franklin Cup Metheringham took a 2-0 half time lead against Cherry Knights with two goals from Jon Miller. The second half was goalless until late in the game when Matt Purbrick made the game safe for Meg before skipper Guy Goodwin added a fourth in injury time.

In the only league game RMSC ensured fifth place as they completed a league double over Horncastle Town. On target for RMSC were James Corby and Gavin Mackie.

In the only mid week game Heckington played their penultimate league match of the season against arch rivals Ivy Tavern, winning 2-0. This ensured fourth place for Heckington as Michael Musson grabbed his 27th goal of the season to move top of the Leading Scorers table. The other goal came from Jason Sedlan.

Next week-end is the final week of the season with just four games left to be played. These being FC Rustons .v. Market Rasen Town

Moorlands & Railway Sports & Social Club sponsored Amateur Cup final

AFC Victory 6-0 Plough FC  Skellingthorpe (H - Kinsella 2, Dring 2, McDougall, Sayce)

Congratulations to AFC Victory on repeating their feat of last season in doing a Cup Double. On Thursday night they thumped the newly crowned League Champions Plough FC Skellingthorpe 6-0 to retain the Amateur Cup. Last week they won the David Cooper Cup when they beat Heckington United 2-1.

15/4/08

Congratulations to Plough FC Skellingthorpe on become Lincoln League Champions for the first time in possibly 50 years. The last time they won the league is not really known but if someone can tell us it would be appreciated. They achieved their feat with one game to spare as they won their twelfth consecutive league game, securing a ninth league double of the season over bottom side Harby 9-0. For Harby it was their final game in the league as they call it a day after a troubled season gallantly trying to get a side ever week.  Also winning by a convincing margin were Heckington United, who beat Metheringham 5-0 as they seek to overhaul AFC Victory for the right to finish third in the table.  On target for Plough were Jon Bell (3), James Coffey (3), Gareth Baxter (2) and Paul Burgess.  Heckington's goals came from Michael Musson (2), Alan Booth (2) and Luke Hollingworth.

With Jonny Bell picking up a hat-trick he has now moved into contention for the Charlie Hammond Leading Goalscorer's Trophy as he now has 24 goals, the same as Billy Munro of Ivy Tavern CSA. They are both now two goals behind Heckington's Michael Musson whose two goals last night put him on 26 for the season. Two other strikers are not out of the chase either as they both have 20 goals, namely Danny Hicks (RMSC Athletic) and Rob Kinsella (AFC Victory).

29/3/08

Last week AFC Victory saw their title hopes take a knock and this week it was a case of deja vu as Heckington too came a cropper, failing to win at home against Fulbeck . Above them second placed Plough Skellingthorpe moved within a point of leaders Ivy Tavern with an expected victory over Metheringham while the Vic’ got back into winning ways with a win at Horncastle Town. Other results too went to form with RMSC Athletic beating Market Rasen Town and FC Rustons United overcoming Cherry Knights.

Second placed Heckington United turned in one of their worst performances in years as visitors Fulbeck went two up inside the first fifteen minutes through goals from Dave Broadbent and James Barnett. It could have been over and done with by the break with Fulbeck missing two further golden opportunities, In the second half the home side “rung the changes” but it was not until the last few minutes that a route one goals netted by Luke Hollingworth followed by a last gasp equaliser from Michael Musson that Heckington stole a draw. This was only the second time this season they have failed to win at home. As stated Plough Skellingthorpe go marching on as they moved onto Ivy Tavern’s shoulder. Saying that though they were made to fight for victory against an even younger than usual Metheringham side. The home side went ahead through 16 year old Rikki Smith who then took no further part in the game, suffering an accidental studding injury to his face as he scrambled the ball home. Plough levelled almost immediately with a peach of a goal from Gareth Baxter. In the second half Plough upped their game going ahead through Dean Szendrey and then adding a fourth with a lobbed goal from Jonny Bell before Craig Smith netted in the last minute with a sweetly struck right foot shoot from 20 yards. The test for Plough comes this week as they play Heckington at the week-end but before this they meet AFC Victory on Tuesday evening. Will their title hopes too, be scuppered?

As for AFC Victory they visited Horncastle Town scoring a goal in each half to win 2-0. On target were Terry McDougall and Dayne Sayce. RMSC Athletic secured fifth place with an ory over Market Rasen Town with goals from Sid Phillip, Danny Hicks and Chris Nuttall. While finally FC Rustons United secured a similar score-line with victory over Cherry Knights through goals from Simon Ward, Dave Curtis and Danny Curtis.  Things could soon start to look clearer in the title race as three of the top four play on  Tuesday night with leaders Ivy Tavern hosting RMSC Athletic and Plough Skellingthorpe playing AFC Victory. Also on Tuesday the semi finals of the Horace Franklin Cup take place, contested between the sides in the bottom four at the end of March. Metheringham host Harby and

28/12/07

Ivy Tavern CSA retain top spot over the Christmas period without playing as Plough FC Skellingthorpe failed to beat arch rivals RMSC Athletic. Seventh placed RMSC Athletic, without a home win in the league so far this season, held Plough to a 2-2 draw to see the village side become the last side to lose their 100% away record. On target for RMSC were Danny Hicks with his 10th goal of the season and Tim Nkomo while Dean Szendrex got both Plough's goals. The one point picked up put Plough just one point behind the Ivy with two games in hand. One point further back, also with two games in hand over the leaders are Heckington United who thrashed fifth placed Ruston Sports Reserves 8-0. The game was over as a contest inside the first twenty minutes as Heckington took a 4-0 lead. It was six nil by half time with two further goals added in the second half. The League's leading scorer Michael Musson netted a hat-trick to take his tally this season to 15. Jonny Vickers also netted three with the remaining two goals coming from Mark Smith and an own goal by the Rustons keeper. Fourth placed AFC Victory, one of only three sides with unbeaten away records, completed a league double on their visit to Market Rasen with a 4-0 win. This was their six successive win while Rasen are now without a win in their last three. On target yet again for Victory was Rob Kinsella who netted twice to take his tally to seven in just four games with Kev Thompson and Terry MacDougall getting the others. Eighth place Horncastle Town saw a seven point gap created between them and opponents, ninth placed, Fulbeck United, as they picked up their fifth successive home win with a comfortable 3-0 win over the villagers. Defeat for Fulbeck saw them without an away win since September. On target for Horncastle were Chris Johnson, Matt Low and Jack Baxter. The battle between the two sides in the bottom three, Metheringham and AFC Maze ended all square at 2-2 in a pulsating game which could have gone either way. Derek Wylde gave Maze the lead twice but a powering header from centre half and skipper Guy Goodwin and one from Jon Miller saw the points shared. The one point picked up by Metheringham was enough to move them two places up the table, on goal difference above the beaten Market Rasen and Harby. For Harby they were unable to raise a side for their trip to FC Rustons with them holding a meeting after Christmas to decide on their future.

Just one of our sides ploughed through yesterdays mud and rain to reach the last eight of the Lincs Junior Cup and they were Plough FC Skellingthorpe. Our only other side in the competition, Metheringham FC went out and other than a top of the table league clash between Ivy Tavern CS  and arch rivals Heckington United, all other games were postponed. Plough FC Skellingthorpe showed that Lincoln League clubs can live with the Lincs League sides as they picked up their second Lincs League scalp of this seasons' competition when they visited and beat Grimsby Sports Club. The whole team could take pride in their 4-3 victory while keeper Chris Hamnet was not only hero but also villain as he saved an early penalty when the score was nil-nil but then at 4-1 up he was sent off for handling the ball outside the box. With ten men the last few minutes were frenetic as the Grimsby side netted twice to bring the score back to 4-3 for a nervous finish. Gareth Baxter had given Plough the lead which was doubled by a header from leading scorer Shane Beesley. The opposition reduced the lead before the break but in the second half new signing, Takdzwa Chizango, netted a brace, with his first goals for the club, to put Plough in control until the last ten minutes dramatic finish. In the second game Metheringham visited East Lincs Combination leaders North Somercotes United but lost 4-0. Meg missed a couple of early chances and then went a goal behind before keeper Steve Brumpton scored an own goal and then a touch of a "Ronaldo dive" from a home forward saw  them make it 3-0 from the penalty spot. North Somercotes added a fourth in the second half to be the last East Lincs Combination side left in the competition. Other sides to progress into the last eight were holders AFC Brumby who won 2-1 at Grainthorpe United; past winners Wyberton , who won 1-0 at Scunthorpe League side Sherpa and Lincs League side CGB Humbertherm who easily beat Boston League side Westside Tigers 5-0. The two all Lincs League games are still to be completed with the Skegness Town versues Hykeham Town game abandoned after 35 minutes because of a waterlogged pitch, with Skegness 2-1 up and the Louth United .v. Colsterworth United game never getting started. Also called off was the game between Central Midlands League side Grimsby Borough and Peterborough League side Deeping Sports.

On the League front the two games scheduled to be played on the Ruston Marconi Sports ground were both postponed but in the only game possible, second placed Ivy Tavern CSA beat third placed Heckington United 3-1 to go top, above present leaders Plough by two points, although they have played three games more. Ivy always had the upper hand although Heckington hit the post early on through Michael Musson. Bill Munro then gave the home side a 1-0 half time lead before Luke Hollingworth levelled the score just minutes into the second half. Ivy continued to dominate with Heckington only getting forward on the counter-attack. Munro netted his second to put Ivy back in front. Then with fifteen minutes to go Heckington keeper Neil Terry was caught in possession on the edge of his box and Adam Hawley netted to secure the points to give Ivy revenge for their early season defeat in the cup and put the Lincoln side top of the table.

The two Village Trophy ties played on Saturday saw wins for the away teams. Cup holders Cherry Knights, who played the 90 minutes with ten men, found themselves 2-0 down at half time but a purple patch by the Knights in the second half turned this around with six goals in half an hour before finishing 6-3 victors. Hero of the (half) hour were Andy Turner with a hat-trick, Dunc Gray with two and Sam Willett. Scorers for Harby were Matt Slater, Rick Whittaker and Dave Jones. In the second tie Heckington beat Metheringham 4-1. An even first half saw Heckington go ahead through a Steve Borrill header before Joe Smith lobbed keeper Neil Terry to level for the home side but a rash challenge right on half time saw Mark Smith put Heckington back in front with a penalty. A killer goal just after the break from Luke Hollingworth put Heckington in control before Jonny Vickers completed the scoring. These results has ensured that the same four sides will feature in the semi finals as did so last season. The only difference being the ties themselves as this time Plough FC Skellingthorpe will host Cherry Knights and Fulbeck United will meet Heckington United.

While these cup ties were taking place leaders Plough Skellingthorpe ensured they stayed top with a comfortable 3-0 win over AFC Maze. Their scorers were Matt Forbes, Luke Warley and Rob Adkin. Ivy Tavern CSA took advantage of Heckington being otherwise engaged as they climbed into second place after a narrow 2-1 win over Fulbeck United. Bill Munro got both Ivy's goals while Chris Baines netted for Fulbeck.  The only other movement in the league saw AFC Victory (6th) swap places with FC Rustons United (5th) after beating them 4-2 in their local derby. Rustons took the lead but a hat-trick from Rob Kinsella (including two penalties) and another from Shaun Booth saw Victory take the points. Rustons goals came from Martin Melia and Nick Taylor. In the final game, another local derby, it was victory for RMSC Athletic (7th) by the odd goal in three as they beat fourth second placed Ruston Sports. Andy Mann and Sid Phillips netted for RMSC with Sam Dillon for Rustons Reserves

The first round of the David Cooper Cup threw up some interesting results but in reality there were few surprises. Holders AFC Victory saw returning striker Rob Kinsella net twice as they overcame Horncastle Town 2-1. The top clash between Heckington United and Ivy Tavern CSA also finished 2-1 in favour of the home side but the match was not as close as the score-line suggests with Heckington going 2-0 up through top scorer Michael Musson and a Luke Hollingworth header and Ivy netting with the last kick of the game through Darren Walker. Another 2-1 score-line saw the only away win of the day as Market Rasen beat Cherry Knights. The biggest win saw AFC Maze find their goal scoring boots as they beat Harby 6-0, their scorers were J. Murphy (3), J. Esberger, G. Falkinder and S. Mehta. The highest scoreline was Metheringham's 4-3 win over FC Rustons United. Ruston's went a goal up through Simon Ward but goals from Jon Miller and Matt Purbrick saw Meg go into the break 2-1 up. Further goals from Joe Smith and Guy Goodwin put them in the driving seat but two goals in the last ten minutes for Rustons  from Russ Westerman and a second from Simon Ward saw a tense finish with the home side hanging on. An equally tense game was witnesses at Monson Park where Plough FC Skellingthorpe and old adversaries RMSC Athletic could not be separated after full time and extra time with their match ending 3-3. In the end Plough went through 4-2 on penalties. The goal scorers for Plough were Shane Beasley  (2) and Craig Smith while Andy Mann, Gavin Mackie and Will Conlon netted for RMSC. The draw for the next round, which will be played in January, sees holders AFC Victory with another home tie as they play AFC Maze. Heckington meet Plough Skellingthorpe, Fulbeck United play Metheringham and Ruston Sports Reserves meet Market Rasen Town. While there was the excitement of the cup going on just one league game was played which ended in what looked a drab, 0-0 draw between Fulbeck United and Ruston Sports Reserves. The point gained by Rustons move was enough to put them up into third place, level on points with the leaders, although they have played five games more.
