Teams discover their fate in McKinnells League

Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 07:00

Three promotion and relegation issues were decided in the McKinnells League last weekend.

The Premier League title is all but Boston's as they now only need one win from their final two games.

At the bottom of the division, the second relegation place is now between Scothern and Martin, with the former needing to win their final game to be safe.

In Division One, Middle Rasen's promotion chase has faltered badly in the last couple of weeks, with Hykeham breathing down their necks for the promotion place.

In Division Two, Boston 2nds were gifted maximum points in their final game which saw them clinch promotion along with champions Heckington.

In Division Three, the title has gone to Caythorpe and the runners-up place is between Timberland and Lindum, who meet next weekend in their final game.

In the Premier League, Boston played their penultimate home game and came away with the biggest winning margin of the season, beating relegated Blankney by 222 runs. Batting first, Boston amassed the top score of the day, 273 for six. Blankney were then skittled out for the day's second lowest total of 51.

The surprise of the weekend was the defeat of Cherry Willingham on their visit to Lindum. Cherry were in serious trouble at eight for three until Will Carter weighed in with 88 to see his side to 136 all out.

Aaron Onyon had bowling figures of four for 18 before rescuing his side with 58. Lindum reached their target with three wickets left.

Market Rasen assured themselves of at least a top four finish as they beat Morton by 42 runs.

Hartsholme ended any relegation fears and in turn placed Scothern in demotion danger after completing a 124-run victory. Hartsholme made 216 for six before Scothern were bowled out for 92.

In Division One, with North Scarle already promoted, Middle Rasen looked favourites to join them, but a run of three straight defeats has now put this in doubt.

Their latest loss saw them thrashed by Bracebridge Heath, losing by 165 runs. Middle Rasen were bowled out for the day's lowest score of 34.

Heath's opening bowler, Tom Cuthbert, enjoyed figures of 6-3-9-6, which featured four wickets in four balls.

While Rasen's hopes were faltering, Hykeham became their only challengers as they thrashed relegated Washingborough.

Kev O'Sullivan made an unbeaten 111 – the top score of day – as Hykeham made 245 four. Washingborough were then bowled out for 95.

The best bowling figures of the day were seen on the West Common where Carholme's Sam Toofany collected seven for 39 as his team beat Saxilby by 31 runs, the day's narrowest winning margin.

There was also a relegation battle between Waddington and Bassingham. Waddington batted first, making 139 for six. Bassingham then collected their third win in four games, reaching the target for the loss of only two wickets.

In Division Two, Heckington were already champions and they completed their programme with victory at Bardney, thus sending the home side down. Heckington made 195 before hustling their opponents out for 68.

Promoted with Heckington are Boston 2nds, who were gifted 20 points in their final game when Branston failed to raise a side.

Winthorpe also collected maximum points with victory at doomed Aisthorpe, which ensured their future in the division.

Owmby ensured fourth place as they beat Fulbeck in a closely fought match.

The top game of the day was in Division Three, with champions-elect Caythorpe visiting the only unbeaten side in all the leagues, second-placed Timberland.

The day belonged to Caythorpe as they became champions with a four-wicket victory after chasing down a moderate total of 101.

The defeat for Timberland has left them needing to beat Lindum 2nds in the final game of the season. Lindum set up a grandstand finish as they won at Millers to move within five points of Timberland.

Millers batted first making 118 for nine with Lindum getting home by five wickets.
