Cherry the pick of the bunch in McKinnells League

Wednesday, September 30, 2009, 06:30

The McKinnells League season drew to a close with the newly-crowned champions of two divisions both beaten by Cherry Willingham sides.

In the Premier League it was fitting that the new champions met the old champions in their final game and what a game the two sides produced.

Cherry batted first, registering 229 for seven. The top score came from Will Carter who made 70, the equal top individual score of the day.

In reply, Boston were on course to reach their target with wickets in hand, but from 176 for three they slipped to 215 for seven.

The last three wickets fell for just one as Cherry sneaked home by eight runs with three balls to spare.

Cherry's Scott Coupland collected two stumpings which saw him retain the Premier League wicketkeeping award with 22 victims.

The second game in the top flight was crucial for Scothern as they needed victory at Morton to ensure they retained their Premier League status.

On the day it was J.R. Drabble who was the hero of the hour as he not only scored 62 in a total of 181 for six – and then produced bowling figures of five for 32 to see Morton bowled out for 55.

Like Scothern in the top division, two sides in Division One were also fighting for their league status.

Bassingham or Waddington were to be relegated.

Bassingham faced Hykeham, who needed three points to be assured of promotion behind champions North Scarle.

Hykeham batted first, making 180. Then in reply Mark Deakin hit a top score of 55 for Bassingham, but Phil Baker weighed in with the fifth best bowling figures of the season, seven for 23, to see Bassingham bowled out for 155.

Bassingham were hoping Waddington would receive only four points in their final game against Carholme, but it was not to be.

Carholme made 143. In reply, Waddington were restricted to 104, but collected six points to send Bassingham down by just one point.

In Division Three, the top game was between second-placed Timberland and third-placed Lindum 2nds.

Both sides needed to win to be assured of the second promotion place.

Timberland posted a respectable total of 194, but some big hitting from Matt Pickering (60 no) and Stuart Turner (52 no) saw Lindum to a four-wicket victory and promotion.

Of the other games, Cherry Willingham 2nds visited champions Caythorpe and came away with a victory.

Cherry skipper Matt Dobson made an unbeaten 51 in his side's 142 for nine, but Caythorpe's batsmen failed to provide, being bowled out for only 97.

The final game saw a battle for fifth place between Rustons and Aswarby.

Rustons had already won their earlier encounter and, batting first, made 168 for seven.

Their leading run-maker, Martin Noble, took his season total to over 400 runs, hitting the day's equal top score of 70 while M. Sherlock took five for 44 for Aswarby.

When Aswarby batted, no-one managed to stay at the crease long as Martin Hickerton and Noble ripped through their innings.

Only Eric Frizzle reached double figures with 11 as they registered 38, the lowest total of the day.

Hickerton finished with figures of 9-2-12-5 and Noble four for 28.

Victory for Rustons saw them go level on points with Aswarby, but victories over their rivals on two occasions during the season ensured the Lincoln side fifth place.

Jonathan Drabble was the hero of the day.
