McKinnell Solicitors Lincoln Cricket League – Week 4

Bright sunshine over the weekend saw some high scores with two sides make          250-plus totals. The highest score of the season so far was recorded at Boston where the home side made 287-7 against Nettleham 1st in their Division One game, while Hartsholme hit 266-8 at Blankney in the Premier League.

On Saturday just one game took place in the Saturday League and this saw Saxilby beat Washingborough by seven wickets when set a target of just 82 to chase. Saxilby’s opener Tom Mangham carried his bat with an unbeaten 50.

On Sunday there were four Premier League games which has resulted with just three sides now having unbeaten records, namely Cherry Willingham, Morton and Lindum. The first two sides are level on points at the top, just five clear of Lindum. Champions Cherry Willingham entertained promoted side Martin who are still looking for their first win in the top flight. Batting first Martin were restricted to 111 by Matt Spikings, who took 6-23 while G. Robinson hit 59 for the visitors. Cherry made the target for the loss of four wickets. At Morton the home side made easy work of beating another winless side, Hykeham. Hykeham batted first being bowled out for 72 and Morton won by seven wickets. Third placed Lindum retained their 100% record when hosting another promoted side in Market Rasen Town.  Josh Brodie, with 52 not out, helped his side to 173-8 and despite a battling 53 from Rasen’s opener Matt Rutherford, the visitors were bowled out for 135. At Blankney the home side saw their unbeaten record go in big style against another promoted side, Hartsholme. Hartsholme posted a massive total of 266-8 due in the main to a blistering 97 by Aussie, Dan Odd, who hit 97 off just 46 balls (including 13 x 4 and 4 x 6). Odd shared a second wicket stand of 126 with skipper Mark Barker, who scored just 10 in the partnership. A “drinks” break was the downfall for Odd, who was bowled on the resumption by Ian McGowan, just three short of his first century in the country. The previous day he also made 97 for Hartsholme against Horncastle but be warned, it certainly will not be long before he hits the three figure mark. Hartsholme, having posted the highest total at Blankney’s in recent history, then skittled their hosts out for just 90 with only opener Dave Pearse (39) and Ian McGowan (29) making double figures.

In Division One Boston 1st surpassed the Hartsholme score as they hosted Nettleham 1st and made 287-8. Dan Milgate hit 103 in 61 balls (including 12 x 4 / 4 x 6) and he shared a 3rd wicket stand of 122 with Jonathan Cheer who made 50. Also making a half century was Ricky Drury with 52. Nettleham in reply were 137-7 at the close with opener Colin Woolfson carrying his bat with 55 not out.  The four points picked up by Nettleham moved them into top position just ahead of Middle Rasen, who were inactive. Old Lincolnians moved into third place with their first win of the season, since promotion. They hosted a very much under strength Reepham side and having bowled their visitors out for 75, reached the target for the loss of two wickets. Boston and Winthorpe share fourth place as they both picked up their first victories of the season. Winthorpe made the trip to Washingborough and with the guile of Ash Locke, who took 5-16, the home side was bowled out for 103. Winthorpe raced to the target for the loss of only three wickets with James McIntyre making an unbeaten 57.

In Division Two Waddington posted their intentions as they picked up their second win of the season to head the table. Hosting Aisthorpe the visitors made 162-6 with Mike Reynolds making 75 but Andy Holmes made 113 not out (to add to his 81 last week)  as Waddington won by seven wickets. In the second match in this division it was an easy win for Carholme at Nettleham as Will Morris took 5-27 to see Nettleham bowled out for 102 and Steve Peace, with an unbeaten 59, saw the Lincoln side to a nine wicket victory. The final match in this division was somewhat closer as Hykeham entertained Branston. These two sides produced a rare “tie” with both sides scoring 161 runs. One can imagine there must have been a lot of tension in the closing overs of this game.

In Division Three the new leaders are “returning” newcomers Owmby, who shared 381 runs on the day with Heighington. Owmby batted first, making 199-8 with Kev Bowring making 67. Then Heighington got within 17 runs of the total, with three wickets left, when they ran out of overs. Dave Orrey made an unbeaten 65 for Heighington. At Nocton visitors South Clifton posted a total of 143-9 but the home side was bowled out for 95, with P. Froggatt taking 5-20. In the final game at Aswarby the home side picked up their first win of the season when entertaining a still winless Rustons. The visitors batted first, making 97-7 and Aswarby reached the target for the lost of only two wickets with N. Thompson making 56. A  further game should have taken place at newcomers Millers (Ruskington) but they failed to fulfil for their third successive weekend. Opponents Boston 2nd and umpire Ken Hack all turned up to find no opposition and the cricket ground having the appearance of not having had any work on it to prepare a wicket since the newcomers had joined the league. The League Management are meeting this week to discuss this issue.

Week-end 3 – 2/3 May

Again dubious weather was threatened for the bank holiday week-end but a nearly full programme was possible with some really interesting and high scoring games played. For sides in the top two divisions it was Premier Trophy day with five ties played while the remaining three ties were conceded as  “walkovers”. Also taking place were five games from Division Two and Three but sadly two sides failed to fulfil fixtures at this early stage of the season which does not bode well for the future. I further one game took place in the Saturday League with a high scoring match at Washingborough 2nd who hosted Reepham 2nd.  Washingborough hit what they must have thought was a winning total, making 187-7 but their visitors reached the total for the loss of just four wickets inside just 32 overs.

Moving onto the Premier Trophy, the top tie of the round was between arch rivals Scothern and Trophy holders Cherry Willingham. Scothern batted first registering the highest score so far in the League’s this season with 248-6. Mark Bradshaw, on his return to the club, top scored with 75 while Pete Wright weighed in with 56. Despite several key players missing Cherry got within 14 runs of the target for the loss of seven wickets but surprisingly no one made a score of fifty or more.  In the only other all-Premier side tie, Market Rasen edged out Lindum by six wickets when set a total of 140 to chase. A second game to see 200 on the scoreboard was at Division One side Middle Rasen where the home side posted a total of 219-5 against Premier side   Blankney. Top scorer was Kev Booth with 86 as he and Gary Bierlein (51) put on 132 for the fourth wicket. Blankney fell 57 runs short with skipper Will Carter’s dismissal by Rasen’s skipper Richard Boryszczuk, when on 61, the pivotal point in the game. Boryszczuk went on to take 5-19. In a second Premier versus Division One tie, North Scarle overcame Old Lincolnians by five wickets, having bowled the Lincoln side out for 92. The pick of the bowling was veteran Jeff Kemp with 4-10 from eight overs for Scarle. The third “Prem” v “One” game saw the easiest victory of the day as Division One side Boston totally annulated Premier side Hykeham, bowling them out for the weekends lowest score of 33 and then winning by 10 wickets. Boston’s star was Ted Brooks with 5-7. As stated the remaining games were conceded with Martin getting a walk-over from Bassingham, Hartsholme the same by Nettleham and Morton a similar passage into the next round from Reepham. The draw for Rd Three is as follows:

Martin v Boston

Hartsholme v Market Rasen

Middle Rasen v North Scarle

Morton v Scothern

In the League games played there were three in Division Two with one being a local derby between BBH and Branston.  Branston batted first with Steve Crawford making 74 as they set a target of 172-4 but on a batting track BBH got home by eight wickets as Jeff Keen top scored with 60.  In the second game, Bardney visited Fulbeck and batting first they made 139-9 with Danny Laughton scoring 69. The home side were then bowled out for 97. The final game in this league saw Nettleham entertain Waddington. In this match teenager, Tom Dalton, helped the home side to 154-5 but Waddington’s “Mr Reliable” Andy Holmes saw his side to a nine wicket victory with 81 not out. In Division Three, four games were scheduled but only two went ahead. Aswarby failed to make the long trip to Owmby and for a second successive week-end, new side Ruskington Millers, failed to fulfil in their home game against Nocton. Another new side Boston 2nd got their baptism into the league off to a great start as they beat visiting side Rustons by eight wickets. The visitors were restricted to 88 all out with Will Brewster picking up the best bowling figures of the weekend as he took 6-24. The target set was no challenge for Boston. In the final game it was a similar sort of game as Heckington entertained Heighington. The home side could post a total of just 74 all out and Heighington reached the target for the loss of only two wickets.
