Amir Unsworth may consider weight change

Tuesday, March 02, 2010, 06:30

Amir Unsworth's immediate focus is capturing the Midlands Area lightweight title, but he has not ruled out moving down the weights in his quest for glory.

The 29-year-old Sleaford fighter takes on Graham Fearn at the Doncaster Dome on Friday, before turning his attention to a crack at Steve Saville's Midlands title, in April or May.

Two wins out of two will elevate Unsworth up the rankings of the lightweight division but the fighter, who is in the Army, could then choose to step down to super-featherweight.

Unsworth has sparred eight rounds with British super-featherweight title contender Andy Morris as well as Manchester's highly-rated Anthony Crolla in recent weeks.

Unsworth will weigh-in for the fight on the day, with a 10st limit, but hopes to get down to the lightweight limit of 9st 9 by the time he steps into the ring.

"I want to see how easy I make lightweight and I am going to be working hard with (nutritionist) Rob Lynch," said the Army man.

"If I manage to do that quite comfortably, I might then try to push for super-featherweight as everyone I have sparred with has commented on how strong I am.

"I have been doing some quality work with the likes of Andy Morris, Anthony Crolla and John Murray and I have held my own against them.

"If I can get myself down to that weight I feel I could be a contender there, more than at lightweight."

York-born Fearn has won five and lost three of his eight professional fights and will not be going to South Yorkshire as a journeyman.

"He is a tough kid and he is not a losing fighter," said Unsworth,

"It is going to be a hard fight and he is going to have a good go and will not be coming to make the numbers up.

"But, I started sparring very early this time and I finished two weeks before the fight in Doncaster.

"I have enjoyed it, I feel a better fighter mentally and now it is just about sharpening up.

"As for Saville, I don't know when I am going to be fighting him.

"I am not the mandatory contender for his title but winning this fight will serve me well.

"He has been fighting in the away corner and recently lost to World Amateur champion, Frankie Gavin, in Liverpool."
